Players of the following instruments may enter the woodwind competitions – flute, piccolo, oboe, cor anglais, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, saxophone or recorder. Recorder players may prefer to enter one of the specialist recorder competitions.

Brass Classes
Players of the following instruments may enter the brass competitions – trumpet, cornet, trombone, tuba, euphonium or horn.

Eric Tebbett (Brass and Jazz)

Eric Tebbett enjoys a reputation as one of the leading music educators in the UK. From being a trumpet player in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain to being awarded the Hugh S Roberton prize for Vocal Ensemble, whilst studying with a scholarship to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music, his career has spanned over 4 decades. As a cornet/trumpet player, he has been privileged to play with the International Staff Band of the Salvation Army, and the GUS Band, whilst holding the post of Head of Brass for Northamptonshire Performing Arts. As a tenor, he has broadcast on radio and television, and released 3 CDs “Quintessentially English” a collection of songs by English composers, “Light in the Darkness”, Gospel Songs of the 19/20th centuries, and “New Found Voices”, songs written by Edwardian women. His performances have featured with Ely Cathedral Choir, Bath Camerata, and Auckland Cathedral Choir, including as Evangelist in both the St John and St Matthew Passions by Bach. As a conductor he has worked with Youth Orchestras and professional ensembles, including conducting the Wellingborough Singers whilst Director of Music at Wellingborough School. He has also been Chorus Master and assistant conductor for Central Festival Opera. Eric is a mentor of Music for Youth, has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship of Trinity College of Music and holds the post of Adjunct Professor of Arts and Ministry at Hartford Seminary, USA. He is a member of the Royal Society of Musicians.
Ian Wilson (Wodwind)

Ian Wilson is one of the UK’s leading recorder players. He is principal recorder professor at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Head of Woodwind at Eton College and visiting recorder/clarinet specialist at North East of Scotland Music School in Aberdeen.
He has performed regularly with The Sixteen, English National Opera, Arcangelo, Gabrieli Consort and Early Opera Company. In recent years, he has performed with orchestras across the world including Budapest Festival Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Helsinki Baroque Orchestra and Irish Baroque Orchestra. He is a founding member of recorder quartet The Flautadors, with whom he has recorded 5 albums.
As a chamber musician and soloist, Ian has performed in many European festivals including Auvergne, East Cork and Innsbruck Early Music Festivals, Edinburgh Festival, Skálholt Festival in Iceland, Oxford Lieder Festival and BBC Proms. Outside classical music, Ian can be heard on albums by Paris Motel and singer-songwriter Vashti Bunyan and the 2024 Oscar-nominated score for the film Poor Things.
His career was the subject of a radio documentary for the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service and on television he had the pleasure of teaching Janet Street-Porter for the Sky Arts programme First Love.
In addition to his performing and teaching work Ian has worked as an adjudicator and examiner in the UK, France, Ireland, the Netherlands (ORDA) and Hong Kong, and he is the conductor and musical director of the Scottish Recorder Orchestra.
He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and had the title of Professor conferred upon him by the Guildhall School in recognition of his work within the institution. In 2023 he received the Freedom of the City of London.
